Five Democrats in the House of Representatives have introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

According to the Associated Press, the impeachment articles are a “long-shot effort that stands little chance (of succeeding) in the Republican-led House.” The Republicans hold a 240-194 majority in the House.

he Democrats have accused Trump of violating the constitution via the obstruction of justice, undermining the independence of the federal judiciary and the freedom of the press. The articles are related to Trump’s firing of James Comey as FBI Director and violations of a clause that prohibits public officials from receiving gifts from foreign governments.

The Democratic lawmakers who brought the articles of impeachment include: Steve Cohen of Tennessee, Luis Gutiérrez of Illinois, Al Green Texas, Adriano Espaillat of New York, Marcia Fudge of Ohio, and John Yarmuth of Kentucky.

“The time has come to make clear to the American people and to this President that his train of injuries to our Constitution must be brought to an end through impeachment,” said Cohen, who led the latest impeachment effort.

This isn’t the first time that Democratic lawmakers have tried to start the impeachment process against President Trump. Green and fellow Democrat Brad Sherman of California initiated articles of impeachment in May 2017, shortly after Trump took office — though public discussion of Trump being impeached began before he even took office.

This latest effort does come after Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. election has yielded several indictments against Trump campaign officials and new connections between the campaign and Russia have come to light.
